Goodbye Harmful Aluminum!

If you know me, you know I’m always on the hunt to replace my day-to-day beauty products with natural ones. One that has proved difficult to find is a natural and aluminum-free deodorant that actually works. I stopped using “regular” deodorant a couple of years ago since I read aluminum is linked to breast cancer and Alzheimer’s -ah! It’s important to understand we use deodorant everyday and all that aluminum is being absorbed by your skin right next to your breast tissue —  terrifying thought, I know. This is why I’ve spent a lot time, research, and money trying to find the perfect one. After wanting to give up, I decided to do another round of testing and am happy to say… I think I finally found it!

I’ve tested out 7 natural deodorants and here are my results:

1. Magnesium Deodorant, $12.90 – Love!

This is the latest one I’ve tried and I gotta say I love it! It does a great job of keeping me dry, which is very important for me. It’s been a great odor protecter too! It rolls on clear. I highly recommend letting it dry before putting your arms down after applying it. If you’re in a rush, just point your blow dryer to it for 5-10 seconds. It’s small enough to keep in your bag just in case you need to reapply – I haven’t had to so far. If you prefer a non-scented deodorant, I recommend this guy.

2. Bali Secrets, $12.99 – Love!

Bali Secrets is a great deodorant as well! It has a slight scent to it, but it went away after a while. If you don’t have a huge wetness problem, this one won’t dry you out like the magnesium may. Bali Secrets was great for protecting against odor too. It’s small enough to fit in your purse in case you ever need reapplication (I haven’t had to so far). Remember to let it dry before putting your arms down. Also, a little bit goes a long way.

Update: Bali Secrets does contain Potassium alum, which is a natural mineral salt made up of molecules that are too large to be absorbed by your skin. They form a protective layer on your skin that inhibits the growth of odor-causing bacteria. While this is a way better alternative to what you see in stores, it is not completely aluminum-free.

3. Lavanila, $12.81 – Meh!

I didn’t love this one. This deodorant is a white solid. I personally like clear deodorants because my underarms get a little discolored when I apply white deodarants to them. It didn’t help with keeping me dry. The scent isn’t bad, but it didn’t do the trick for me.

4. Tom’s, $3.26 – Nah!

The price is good, but it definitely didn’t work for me. It didn’t help with wetness or odor protection. If you don’t sweat too much or don’t have any odor, I would say it’s good for the price. However, if you work out and need heavier protection, this guy is not for you.

5. Lafe’s Aloe Spray Deodorant, $5.19 + Shipping – Nope!

I initially tried this stuff at a gym and thought it worked, but quickly realized it’s not good for day-to-day use. I applied it at night after showering at the gym and it was fine over night while I was sleeping, but that’s about it. My underarms stayed wet and it wasn’t a great odor protecter during the day.

6. Lush Greeench, $20.89 – So-So!

It will protect you for half the day, but you will need to reapply. The only problem is how do you re-apply loose powder without getting it all over your clothes? I made my own mixture of lush powder, coconut oil, and baking soda and turned it into a solid to fix that, but it just created more work. It somewhat protected from odor, but the wetness was still there. I prefer the magnesium or Bali secrets one over this guy.

7. Vitale 100% Confident, $18 – Ugh!

I’m beginning to think spray deodorants aren’t for me. This guy didn’t protect me from wetness or odor. I had to return it because it was a disappointment. This is alright if you don’t have wetness or don’t need odor protection.

In conclusion, Bali Secrets was my favorite because it protected me from wetness. The magnesium one is a close second if you don’t need a lot of wetness protection. I hope it works for you!

Stay healthy friends! Thanks for tuning in :)

8 Things Every Woman Should Own

Ladies, having the perfect wardrobe starts with the essentials. Owning these key pieces can help add more pizazz to your everyday look.

1. The Perfect Coat
Having the right coat can make fashion life so much easier. Throwing a fabulous coat on the most basic outfit can add a lot of style with the least amount of effort. It’s worth it to invest a little extra in a warm and stylish coat, after all, it’s the one thing you’ll be wearing everyday.

2. Leather or Suede Jacket
A leather or suede jacket is a perfect statement piece. You can throw this on top of any outfit and look like a rockstar instantly. The best part: You don’t have to put down $500+ for real leather or suede (unless you really want to). Go to your local Zara, Nordstroms, or Bloomingdales and you can grab a fabulous  faux jacket for under $100.

3. Booties
Boots are great, but booties are even better! Having a cute pair of booties to go with your leggings, dresses, skirts or jeans is essential to a chic yet effortless wardrobe. What I love the most about booties is that you can go flat without looking too casual. Gone are the days when your running shoes were your everyday comfort shoes.

4. Statement Scarf
I love throwing a printed scarf over all of my outfits. It instantly adds a luxurious feel to any look. Blanket scarves are a great substitute for a jacket on those milder days.

5. Well Fitted Jeans
Having a good pair of jeans is essential to any person’s wardrobe. Instead of buying cheap jeans and having to throw them out a couple times a year, opt for a more expensive pair that you only have to replace once in a while. J Brand, Joe’s, AGs, Paige, and Citizens of Humanity all are wonderful brands that will last you a while… and the softness of the denim will ‘wow’ you!

6. The Perfect Everyday Bag
Spend a little more on a purse you plan to use everyday. If you have your essential purse down, you can buy cheaper fun statement purses the rest of the year. The great thing about a luxurious purse is that it can dress up even the most simplest of outfits.  philip lim

7. Dressy T-Shirt
An easy way to look more polished is to ditch the basic cotton t-shirts and go for synthetic shirts. Synthetic shirts are great because you can hand or machine wash them and not worry about them shrinking in the dryer or the fabric looking old and stained.

8. Indoor jacket
If your sick of cardigans, opt for an indoor jacket instead. Having a cute indoor jacket is a great way to layer your look and add style to your outfit. My favorite indoor jackets are ‘moto’ style jackets with bigger collars.

Star Wars Mania

The other day I got asked “Will I look too nerdy if I wear my Star Wars gear?” My response, “No Way!” I love when a person wears clothing that represents their interests and hobbies. It’s a great way to incorporate yourself in your style.

What matters more is how you wear your Tatooine couture. Wearing a graphic t-shirt with a well fitted pair of slim jeans will pull your outfit together nicely. On the other hand, wearing baggy or old tattered jeans will take away from awesomeness of the gear.

To commemorate the upcoming trilogy, I’ve rounded up some of my favorite Star Wars gear for guys and gals. So brace yourselves for December 18th …. and may the force be with you :)

Natural Beauty

If you’re like me, just the thought of putting chemicals on your skin probably freaks you out. I decided to start replacing my everyday beauty basics with natural alternatives. So far, I’ve come across some pretty cool products that i’m excited to share with you guys. Enjoy!

1. Karma Naturals Nail Polish Remover, $11.99

Wow! This stuff works better than any nail polish remover I’ve bought in the past. It easily took off my nail polish (even my Sally Hansen 10day no-chip top coat) and smells great. This stuff won’t dry out your nails and I only needed one cotton pad for both of my hands. I’m excited to try their other products!

2. Lush Deodorant, $7.95

After reading up on all the harmful chemicals deodorants contain (which ultimately soak into your skin, ah!), I decided to look for other alternatives. I tried Healthy Deodorant from Sephora, but didn’t love it after a while. However, I did try Lush’s deodorants after a recommendation from a friend and I like it so much better. I personally use the powder, but have heard great things about the solid as well.

3. Voluspa Coconut Wax Candles

I swear by these. I love the coconut wax candles by Voluspa. They have great scents, last for a long time, and come in beautiful containers. You can even use the wax as perfume by putting some oil behind your ears and wrists when it’s solid. If you live in San Francisco, you can find these at Therapy in North Beach or the Mission.

4. Indian Healing Clay

This bentonite clay is simply amazing. Even Mindy Kaling recently gave it a shout out. It’s great for oily skin, pimples, black heads, and skin tightening. Try mixing it with some apple cider vinegar for even an even deeper clean. The best part is the price tag, under $8!

5. Coconut Oil

I love using coconut oil as moisturizer because it absorbs quickly and smells great. I like to add a bit of vitamin E in mine by melting the coconut oil and mixing a few drops in. A friend told me to try adding a couple drops of ecuplytus essential oil, which i’m excited to try. You can get coconut oil anywhere. I personally get mine at Costco (~$30 for two huge tubs!).

6. Dr. Bronner’s Castile Soap

Dr. Bronner’s has a reputation for making excellent skincare products and I couldn’t agree more. The products are vegan, all natural, and at a great price. I use this body wash everyday and it lasts me about 5-6 months. I love using the lavender one right before bed.

Hope you enjoyed my list!

Black… White… White… Black.

It’s a fact… I love black and white! Whether it be stripes, prints, or just basic black or white, I always want a new piece in my closet. I’ve searched through my favorite stores to find my top 5 black and/or whites for Fall — or any season really, yay b&w! Enjoy!

Leather & Lace

Saying I’m fragile
I try not to be
I search only
For something I can’t see…

One thing I love mixing is the innocence of lace with the roughness of leather. I love mixing the two extremes in my style… and… well, my personality too.

What better backdrop than this really cool street art I found in an alley of North Beach. Enjoy!

Brick & Mortar

Being of Indian origin, my mother has suitcases full of traditional Indian garments she no longer wears. During our mother-daughter cleaning and chatting session, I decided to see what the suitcases had to offer. I came across this teal ‘maxi skirt’, which was originally the skirt to a lengha. Loving the color, flare and endless style possibilities, I snagged the piece… this is how I wore it:

Like it Once, Like it Twice

LADIES, PICTURE THIS: A Navy Blue 100% Silk Banana Republic dress that is absolutely perfect for weddings, interviews and going out for cocktails. Now, imagine the price tag: $100? $150?… What if I said $20? No, really… $20!

Transform your closet (and your bank account) with this amazing online consignment retailer called that is revolutionizing the way us label junkies love to shop. Twice offers brands like Banana Republic, Gap, Kate Spade, Juicy, Anthropologie and tons more at 50-70% off.

What’s more? You can sell your labels to Twice and get some cash! You can get more details on what labels they buy and how to send in your clothes for FREE, here.

I know online shopping can be intimidating, but if done right, you can save BIG! I’ve included some online shopping tips below, enjoy!

Here are two tips for making online shopping work for you:

1. Take note of materials: some measurements may seem tiny, but keep in my mind a lot of materials have some give or stretch to them. Study up materials to know which ones do and don’t (you can find material tags inside your clothes to tell you exactly what the garments are comprised of).

2. Measuring Tape: Yea, you can measure yourself, but what I feel helps the most is measuring a garment that looks like the one you want to buy. For example, if I want to buy a t-shirt that is 100% cotton, I can reach into my closet and grab a similar 100% cotton t-shirt that fits me the best. Measure arm-pit to arm-pit for bust and shoulder to bottom for length. Now, compare the measurements listed in the garment you want to buy online… and voila! – you’ve got yourself the perfect fit!
